National Artists of the Philippines                                     Since Its establishment in 1972, the NAA has institutionalized awards in the areas of architecture, design and allied arts, film and broadcast arts, visual arts, literature, dance, music and theater. We learned About artists whose practice peaked during the so-called Modern Period and we looked at their works that have the greater public dimension, sch as those produced collaboratively or in the context of a campus. While the government and institutions retain the power   to “validate” or name an individual as “National Artist”, We have also seen how power can be negotiated, as exemplified in the series of movements by the public that approached the issue of the award system in 2009.
GAMABA has been named by Garcia as the Manlilikha ng Bayan or National Living Treasure. The said award and the GAMABA recognize the outstanding work of artists in the Philippines. The Production Process and The Changing Environment These are the following factors that affect the traditional artist's production process: Tourism- Land areas are converted into sites for tourist consumption. Mining and infrastructure projects- The construction of dams and the establishment of oil and mining companies evict people from their dwellings and severely damage the environment. Militarization- The insecurity and tensions brought by militarized zones arrest people's ability to create art.
Context refers to settings, conditions, circumstances, and occurrences affecting production and reception or audience response to an artwork. It is a set of background information that enables us to formulate meanings about works of art and note how context affects form.   For example the bulul,an indigenous, pre-colonial ritual object and motif in the everyday life of the people of the Cordillera region.  A Brief History of Philippine Art In historical terms, we refer to art before the coming of first colonizers as “pre-conquest”. In Stylistic terms, we refer to it as “indigenous” to emphasize the idea that our ancestors have been making art even before colonization. Inspirations on the enhancement of Philippine arts in the pre-colonial era were usually the belief systems of the native people and the natural world. Colonialism shifted the inspirations of Philippine art towards Western notions of “art”. Since the independence era, inspirations of Philippine art have shifted into more indigenous roots, notably, through Philippine Mythology. The account puts the practices of contemporary artists in context, thus making us understand that their practices are influenced by major traditions which we can trace through our long history of making and making sense of art.                           What Is Contemporary Art?                                  Contemporary Art is distinguishable from Modern Art in historical, stylistic, and cultural terms. The most common characteristics of Contemporary Art revolve around their being site-specific, process-based, collaborative, and interactive. However, there are also artists who use a mixture of contemporary, indigenous Islamic, popular and traditional art forms, media, and content.
